Only school with evacuation plan

Dear sir - May I take this opportunity of congratulating Mrs Maura Beggy, principal, and teachers and students of Kentstown National School on the tremendous work which they have initiated in becoming the 'greenest school" in the country. A number of 'green" projects are in operation in the school over a long number of years. All credit for this outstanding achievement is due to the wonderful staff and students of the school. I was delighted to see the Minister for the Environment, Mr John Gormley acknowledging the endeavours of the school and rewarding them with a green flag. However, Mr Gormley failed to mention that the school is the only school in the country which has an evacuation plan in place in the likely event of noxious fumes escaping from the Knockharley super dump which is situated 1,000 metres from the school. Bad odour emissions are a regular nuisance. In spite of this Mr Gormley proposes to agree to the increase in the waste intake by 400,000 tonnes per year. Local population concerns are being completely ignored. Mr Gormley, making this area the home of landfill sites, incinerators and pylons, what do we need to expect next from your 'green" party? Yours, Suzanne Jamal Flemington, Balrath.
