Mr C Condon SC, Ashbourne & Dublin The death occurred recently of one of the leading figures in Irish legal circles, the former attorney general, Ashbourne native Colm Condon. Aged 87, Mr Condon died in Dublin, where he lived in Dalkey. Mr Condon was son of Mr Thomas Condon, a former Fianna Fail member of Meath County Council, and chairman from 1934-1936, and a senator, and his wife, Margaret, who taught in Ashbourne. Deceased was educated at Terenure College and University College, Dublin. Called to the Bar in 1944, he became a senior counsel in 1959 and was appointed attorney general by the then Fianna Fail taoiseach, Sean Lemass in 1965. He continued to serve under Jack Lynch until the Fine Gael led coalition came into power in 1973. His tenure as attorney general coincided with a period of momentous events in the history of the State, including the Troubles and the arms trial. Until the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was established in 1973, it was the attorney general who prosecuted criminal cases. So it was as attorney general that Mr Condon took the prosecution against Charles Haughey, on behalf of the State, on charges of conspiring to import arms, at a time when both men were members of the cabinet. A generation later, Mr Condon as senior counsel, represented Mr Haughey at the Moriarty Tribunal and in High Court proceedings challenging the tribunal"s powers. Mr Condon also played a key role in drafting legislation that led to the establishment of the modern Special Criminal Court in 1972. He built up a successful practice, concentrating mainly on defamation and personal injury cases. In recent years, he was critical of the State"s indemnity deal with the religious orders, which limited the exposure of those orders to law suits by victims of abuse, which was made by in the absence of the then attorney general. In his younger years, Mr Condon played Gaelic football with the Dunshaughlin GAA club, in the 1940s, as there was no club in Ashbourne at the time. The Fianna Fail cumann in Ashbourne is named after his father, Senator Thomas Condon. Mr Condon was predeceased by his first wife, Stephanie, and his survived by his wife, Jacqueline; sons, Colm P and Eoin, and daughters, Stephanie and Carolyn; sisters, Eileen, a former teacher in Cushinstown NS, Kilmoon, Dympna in Tipperary and Mir, Ashbourne, relatives and friends. A funeral Mass took place in St Patrick"s Church, Monkstown, and the following day, 13th August, in St Mary"s Church, Mallow, Co Cork, with burial afterwards in St Gobnait"s Cemetery.
