RECENT DEATHS
Mr S DONOHOE
NAVAN
Widespread shock and regret was occasioned by the death of Sean Donohoe (69) Proudstown, Navan, the well-known owner of Donohoe Electrical, Kennedy Road, Navan.
A native of Navan, he was a member of the Donohoe family of Brews Hill. He took over the running of his father, George Donohoe's electrical business in Canon Row, Navan, when the latter died in the 1960s. Sean Donohoe had worked with his father in the business.
Shortly after Navan Shopping Centre opened in the early 1980s, Mr Donohoe moved operations to the present Kennedy Road location, and the business became one of the largest electrical retailers in the region.
Mr Donohoe was a self-taught electronics expert. Through this, he developed an enthusiasm for ham radio and maintained this throughout his life. He was a keen diver in his younger days and a founder member of Navan Sub Aqua Club. During that period, he took part with the club's members in a number of river rescues.
His late father had been a flying instructor, so Mr Donohoe also developed an interest in aviation, initially expressed in making model aircraft. When he was in his late 40s, he took out his private pilot licence. He acquired his first light aircraft in the late 1980s and completely restored the plane.
Deceased made many friends through his love of aviation. This was demonstrated at his burial on Tuesday last (4th September) in St Mary's Cemetery, Navan, when three of his friends Trevor Kellett, Kevin Farrell and Peter Reilly performed a farewell manoeuvre overhead in planes at the end of the ceremony. This moving display elicited spontaneous applause from the large attendance at the burial. The three pilots were fellow members with Mr Donohoe of the High Kings Flying Club.
Deceased also made hundreds of friends in the electrical business throughout the country, and many of these and friends he made through other interests attended the funeral. He had been a member of Royal Tara Golf Club.
Sean Donohoe is survived by his wife, Ann; sons, Stephen who carried on his father's love of flying when becoming a pilot with Aer Lingus, and John, who maintained the other family interesst, Donohoe Electrical; daughter, Julie Daly, who formerly taught at Nobber Vocational School; grandson, Sean Daly; son -in-law, Michael; daughters-in-law, Claudine and Deirdre; sister, Eilish Boyle, Athlumney, Navan; brother-in-law, Christo Boyle; relatives and friends.
He was predeceased in England by his eldest sister, Joan Donohoe, just three weeks prior to his death. Mr Donohoe's funeral took place from St Mary's Church to St Mary's Cemetery, Navan.
MRS I MAGUIRE,
GARLOW CROSS
THERE was considerable sadness at the passing of Mrs Ita Maguire (82), Castletown, Garlow Cross, Navan on 10th August at Beaumont Hospital. Anyone that called to visit could be sure of a lovely chat ranging from happenings in the old days right up to current times. She had a wealth of information about local history and was always happy to talk about it and all the characters that came and went in the area during her lifetime. It was a great source of pride to Mrs Maguire when people called requesting her assistance with things that happened in bygone days. She always enjoyed visits from her neighbours and friends. Being one of the oldest residents in the parish, Mrs Maguire will be greatly missed for all the knowledge she possessed
Religion was very important to her and was a great source of comfort to her during her life. In latter years due to ill health she was unable to attend Mass regularly and she looked forward to the visits from the priest on the first Friday of every month. She treated these occasions with great reverence.
Mrs Maguire's life was touched with sadness in 1968 when her eldest son Finny died at the age of 19. In 1981, she lost her husband Finian at the age of 57.
After three years on dialysis, Mrs Maguire had a kidney transplant in 1990 in Beaumont Hospital. This enabled her to live a normal life until ill health returned again a few years ago.
The last year of Ita's life was particularly distressing for her due to the illness of her eldest daughter, Carmel Woods. Mrs Maguire made the harrowing and brave journey from Beaumont Hospital to visit Carmel in Navan Hospital when both of them were gravely ill. She then returned to Beaumont where she passed away on the 10th August. Carmel passed away two weeks later, on 24th August.
Mrs Maguire is survived by her sons Donie, Eamon, and Sean; daughters Eileen, Mary, Deirdre and Angela; sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great grand-children, brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and a large circle of friends.
