'King Kong' Carroll joins MGM

Dunshaughlin-based boxer Jono Carroll (10(1)-0) will make his MGM debut this weekend. The Prizefighter champion was officially announced as an MGM fighter last week, and will fight on the card at the Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Birmingham on Saturday. He joins Olympian Paddy Barnes at MGM.
Irishboxing.com says it’s a massive change for ‘King Kong’ who despite being eager to fight struggled to get dates as a Matchroom fighter.
It will be Carroll’s first trip to the ring since the super featherweight registered a points win in the Manchester Arena in May and MGM have suggested a win will set up a strong finish to the year.
Carroll looked on the cusp of big things in late 2014 when, after victory over Declan Geraghty, he secured a spot on Prizefighter, which he won in exciting fashion live on Sky Sports. A contract with Matchroom and Eddie Hearn followed, but the popular Dublin didn’t kick on. He passed every test provided and fought big cards for Matchroom, but he wasn’t kept as busy as he would have wished, indeed he has only fought once in 2016.

There was talk Matchroom had a title fight lined up for him, but the undefeated 24 year old has been lured by the promise of regular action by MGM and joins a host of Irish names on their roster.

A statement released by MGM said: 'Jono is a boxer that has been on MGM’s radar for a while, and we are delighted to welcome him to the team. He has made a great start to his career and has a flawless record of 10-0.

'Jono’s career has been a bit of a slow-burner to date and MGM intend to keep him active as he aims to establish himself as a real force in the Super-Featherweight division.

This is a vision that Jono enthusiastically shares: “Signing with MGM is the perfect move for me. I have big plans moving forward and I firmly believe that MGM will help me achieve those ambitions. Keeping me busy is exactly what I need at this stage of my career and I fully expect to be challenging for titles over the next twelve months” he said.

The signing of Jono is one that excites MGM. “He has a real fan-friendly style and is an ambitious man. We feel MGM have the ideal setup to help him fulfil his potential. The next twelve to eighteen months will be huge for Jono and we firmly believe he will establish himself as a genuine force in the division” MGM management commented.
