Karate success at international event - local action on Sunday

Competitors from Meath Karate - Sadhbh O’Brien, Daina Victory and Luke Victory - sparkled under the glare of international competition when they were part of a Champions International Karate Association (CIKA) Ireland squad that claimed medals at Liverpool this month.

The three talented competitors represented their club and their country at the CIKA England Karate Championships that attracted competitors from several nations including England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Ireland.

All the competitors competed under the CIKA banner which is based in Belgium.

Luke Victory claimed gold in the boys u-12 section while Daina Victory, who was competing in her first international competition also fought brilliantly to secure the silver medal having narrowly lost out in the final of the girls u-10 section.

Sadhbh O’Brien, who was competiting in her first u-12 event, took silver with an impressive display of tenacity and skill.
She battled her way to the final only to lose by a point in a very tough contest.

ALL-IRELAND KARATE

There will be action this weekend locally when second round of the WKFI All-Ireland All-Styles Karate League will take place in Claremont Stadium on Sunday 29th May from 9.30am.

The competition will feature Kumite (fighting) and Kata and will be run under WKF rules.

The event is hosted by Meath Karate which is based at Bodytrim Fitness in Navan.

Over 100 competitors are expected to take part from age five to adult level.

The chief aim of the league is to promote and encourage new talent. There will be plenty of internationally-experienced competitors and All-Ireland champions.

Spectators are welcome and there is no admission charge.
Karate is tipped to be part of the Olympic Games from 2020.
