Canny win for Donoghue

Dunshaughlin jockey Keith Donoghue was on the mark yesterday at Downpatrick when he got a first win over fences with the Gordon Elliott-trained Canny Tom which completed a treble on the day for the Summerhill man.

Canny Tom stayed on well to win by almost a length after an encouraging debut over the major obstacles at Tramore last week when finishing second.

"Friends of mine own him so it's good to get another win out of him," commented the jockey in a post-race interview about his fifth winner of the season.

Elliott's other winners were Poormans Hill in a handicap hurdle and Monkshood - both partnered by Jack Kennedy.
