Carrickshock response to report

Carrickshock GAA club PRO Declan Lennon contacted the Meath Chronicle today regarding the report on the Leinster Club IHC semi-final against Kiltale at Trim yesterday.

Kilkenny intermediate champions Carrickshock defeated Meath senior champions Kiltale by 2-12 to 2-9 and will now meet Kildare champions Celbridge in the final. Celbridge defeated Bray Emmets in the other semi-final yesterday.

The PRO commented

'In response to your article on the Leinster Intermediate Club Hurling semi-final yesterday between Kiltale and Carrickshock we find the repeated references to ‘Cynical Carrickshock’ quite offensive.

'While the match, at times, became far too heated for our liking, and melees were more common than anyone would like to see,  I think it’s highly unfair to apportion all the blame to the Carrickshock side.

'As is sadly far too common in hurling matches, both teams felt very aggrieved at various refereeing decisions, but the tone of your article would indicate that the referee’s goodwill was towards one side only.

'I might point out that Carrickshock were awarded a total of only two frees in the Kiltale half of the field during the whole match.

'I don’t think any objective observer could claim that there was a total of only two fouls committed by the Kiltale defence.

'And while you refer to 'Cynical Carrickshock', I can certainly recall several incidents where Carrickshock players (forwards especially) were subjected to very unsavoury treatment both on and off the ball, and not all from players, which went totally unpunished.

'I would ask you to withdraw the article, or at the very least, amend the headline to one that more accurately reflects the behaviour of both teams.'
