New sculpture at paupers graveyard

A new stone sculpture has been formally unveiled in the Paupers Graveyard at the Tower of Loyd.
The sculpture sets in stone the verses of a poem by local man Louis Collins that commemorate those deceased souls who were buried in the graveyard during the famine years 1845 -1852.
The unveiling took place following the annual gathering in the Paupers Graveyard.
The stone sculpture, which is located at the entrance to the graveyard was designed by local artist, Charles Williams, on a stone prepared by Bennetts Monumental Stoneworks.
The sculpture was commissioned by Meath County Council and the project was supervised by Kells conservationist, Greg Smith.
Local County Councillor Sean Drew attended the unveiling of the sculpture and congratulated all those who assisted in its development, noting that all the parties involved were based locally.
Cllr Drew outlined his hope that this would be the first of many works of art that local artists will develop for locations throughout North Meath with the support of Meath County Council.
