Navan Eviction Averted

The eviction of a young family from their home in Balreask Village in Navan has been averted as the bank in question has agreed to give the family time to come to some arrangement.
As preparation were being made for a massive show of support for the family, Deputy Peadar Tóibín contacted the bank who agreed not to go ahead with the repossession of the house, which is home to a  couple and their two year old child.
With an estimated 7,000 Meath mortgages in arrears, a wave of evictions is expected in the county over the coming months.
The eviction at Balreask Village had been scheduled for tomorrow, but following a Facebook call by Meath Anti Eviction, up to 100 volunteers had indicated they would form a circle around the home to prevent the family’s eviction.
Both Deputy Tóibín and Paul Scannell of Meath Anti Eviction say that while the situation is still not fully resolved, it is hopeful.
However, Deputy Tóibín pointed out that an estimated 7,000 Meath mortgage holders are in arrears
Deputy Tóibín said he had been in contact with the family and the bank concerned and managed to persuade them to avert the eviction.
“An eviction in this circumstance is the worst possible outcome. Putting this family out of their home would have had a huge trauma on all concerned. Not having the safety of your own home creates huge vulnerability and stress most especially when a young child is involved.
“Unbelievably it is estimated that 7,000 Meath mortgage holders are in mortgage distress. It is really important that those in mortgage distress do their utmost to communicate with the banks and do not ignore correspondence'.
Paul Scannell of Meath Anti Eviction said there would be a lot of battles ahead but they were prepared to rally around and peacefully stop evictions.
His organisation had put out a call on Facebook for people to come along on Wednesday morning to stop the eviction.
“We had a massive response and more than 100 people were prepared to come and form a protective barrier around the house,” he said.
Mr Scannell said that they were prepared to do this for anyone facing eviction.
