Schoolgirls complete golf introductory programme

Students from O'Carolan College, Nobber, recently completed the First Tee Golf Programme, which aims to introduce more people to the sport of golf and the life skills associated with the sport. The students received certificates following the completion of the programme. They had taken part in The First Tee Programme over the last three years and this was the first time that a group of girls from O'Carolan College had taken part in the programme. The group included 10 students from first, second and third year. The First Tee of Ireland is open to boys and girls between the ages of eight and 18 years-old and participants do not have to be members of a golf club nor have played golf previously. It is a unique educational programme which uses the game of golf as its platform for instruction and development. The students were coached in their final session of the programme by George Yelvington, who is a PGA professional at Navan Golf Club. They were presented with certificates marking their completion of the introductory level of the First Tee Programme, which included six different lessons in Navan Golf Club with PGA professional coaches Eoin Ryan and George Yelvington, who are both trained instructors with the First Tee Programme. Kevin Stewart, director of services with Meath County Council, attended the presentation. Meath County Council gave €5,000 in sponsorship towards the participation of the students from O'Carolan College and schools in Navan in the First Tee Programme. The sponsorship coincided with the Solheim Cup with the aim of encouraging girls to play golf.
