38th anniversary of Mid-Meath League - NEFL

Today marks the official 38th anniversary of the establishment of the Mid-Meath League which is now the North Eastern Football League.

The first games were played on Sunday 23rd November 1980 and this weekend represents a milestone for the NEFL.

It was on this date in 1980 when the League kicked off, and was then known as The Mid-Meath League, it was to later become the Meath & District League.

However, 38 years ago today a total of eight teams were in affiliation and included  Moynalvey, Robinstown, Skryne, Dunshaughlin, Cosmos, Turmec and two Kilmessan teams.

THE FIRST KILMESSAN TEAM

Moynalvey won the League and Cosmos won the Cup. Moynalvey defeated Robinstown 2-0 in the League final but the top two were not eligible to play in the Cup.

The first weekend results were

Skryne 6, Kilmessan 2

Moynalvey 3, Cosmos 2

Dunshaughlin 6, Turmec 2

Kilmessan B and Robinstown did not play on the opening weekend

People involved from the start include present day Secretary, Gerry Gorman, and executive members John Gorman and Eugene Lynch who had the distinctive honour of playing in goals for Robinstown who finished second and coaching Moynalvey who finished top.

The Mid-Meath League was formed out of necessity as an application earlier in 1990 to join the Louth & District League and the Leinster Junior League were both rejected.
