At the launch were Tommy Reid, Paul Conran and Dan Daly.

Spirit of Dunboyne Festival launched

The Spirit of Dunboyne Motorsport Festival was launched earlier this month with the event scheduled for Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September.

Motorsport enthusiasts flocked to Dunboyne for the event with a wide array of rally cars, racing carts and classic race motorsycles on display for the occasion.

The Spirit of Dunboyne celebrates motorsport past and present and also offers an opportunity for all owners of classic and vintage vehicles to put them on display.

One of the vehicles on display at the launch event was a Jordan 193 F1 car which was originally driven by Rubens Barrichello in 1993 and is now owned by Dunboyne Motor Club’s vice-chairman Dan Daly.

A former BOSS (Big Open Single Seaters) Ireland champion Daly holds the fastest lap time around the Mondello Park international track by an Irish driver.

Also present were many drivers who raced the four-mile Dunboyne circuit between 1958 and 1967 when the racing ceased on completion of the newly-opened Mondello Park.

Current club president Tommy Reid, who still holds the lap record for the Dunboyne circuit set in 1965 at 101.24 mph, recalled his successful racing career.

“We had very poor racing gear then and going in the pits I used to have to put my feet into water to cool them down,” Tommy commented about his first race in Dunboyne.

“Dunboyne was always a hairy circuit, especially the bridges going out of the village,” he added.

The Dunboyne circuit is remembered as a unique track with a lot of racing history and it is for this reason that the Dunboyne Motor Club was established in 2006.

This unique piece of racing history is celebrated by the Dunboyne Motor Club with the aim to rekindle memories of the car and motorcycle racing which took place there.

Growing from strength to strength over the past 12 years, the spirit of Dunboyne is now a major event on the Irish Motorsport calendar.

“Past events have attracted thousands of people to Dunboyne village with something on offer for all ages and it is our hope that 2019 will our best event yet” stated chairman Sean Henry.
