Navan kicks off hockey season with a win

The Navan women's hockey team kicked started their Leinister League Div 5 campaign in the perfect way with a 3-1 win over Avoca at the Mercy Convent today with Bronagh Markey firing home two goals.

This was a rousing encounter with both teams going all out to win with Ruth Fitzgerald's side doing enough to get over the line.

Markey scored her first in the opening minute but Avoca hit back to equalise through Elisa Cullen. A good start to the second-half again reaped rich dividends for Navan with Markey bagging a brilliant individual second goal before Mairead Canavan slotted home a third.

Coach Fitzgerald said she was delighted with the performance of the team especially as a number of young players were added to the squad this season.

"Everyone played their part in this victory. It was very encouraging considering we had so many new players," she added.
