Weir names team to take on the Faithful

The Meath team to take on Offaly in the NHL Div 2A at St Brendan's Park, Birr tomorrow, 2pm has been announced with new manager Nick Weir looking to get the campaign off to a winning start against the home side who are strong favourites to win the division.

Meath will be captained by Sean Geraghty who has been named at right-corner-back with Shane Brennan and Stephen Morris making up the full-back line. They line up in front of Trim's Charlie Ennis who will take his place between the posts.

Another Trim player Luke Moran is selected on the half-back line but alongside him are the experienced James Toher and Keith Keoghan.

Alan Douglas who has played in attack in the past is named at midfield along with Peter Slevin. Another relatively new face to the senior inter-county scene is Niall Smullen who is selected in the half-forward line along with Michael Burke and James Kelly.

Cathal McCabe, Damien Healy and Padraig O'Hanrahan make up the full-forward line and they will be hoping to make the most of any openings in the Offaly back-line.

A few weeks ago Meath travelled to Birr to take on Offaly in the Kehoe Cup and shipped an 3-18 to 8-18 defeat although the scoreline is expeccted to be a lot closer this time around.

Last weekend Meath went on a training camp to Waterford and they are sure to be fired up by Weir as they seek to engineer a shock. After a number of years away Offaly are back playing in Birr with many clearly regarding the venue as the spiritual home of the game in the county.

Weir has asked for Meath supporters to get firmly behind the team. He's hoping supporters from the Royal County will travel in big numbers as their campaign gets underway.

The Meath team is: Charlie Ennis;  Sean Geraghty (captain), Shane Brennan, Stehen Morris; Keith Keoghan, James Toher, Luke Moran; Alan Douglas, Peter Slevin; Niall Smullen, Mickey Burke, James Kelly; Cathal McCabe, Damien Healy, Padraig O'Hanrahan.
