Wolfe Tones best in extra-time
Wolfe Tones manager Cathal O Bric was celebrating after his team won the MFC Div 2 Shield final against Clann nan nGael at Pairc Tailteann this evening.
The Tones had to go to extra-time to win 3-16 to 3-11 after normal time finished at 2-11 to 3-8.
There were a number of key moments, especially during extra-time, that were pivotal in the win for Wolfe Tones.
The first was a four-minute scoring burst in the first period of that extra-time that produced 1-3 and boosted the Tones to a 3-14 to 3-9 interval advantage.
Laochra O Fionnagain found the net with Oisin Martin, Jason Carr and Joseph Smith all sending over from play to leave Clann na nGael reeling with only a solitary Darragh Swaine point in response.
The second was with about three minutes remaining in the second period of extra-time when the Tones custodian Darragh Kenny dived smartly to his left and turned a blistering Matthew Smith around the post.
Those two incidents ultimately determined the outcome.
The teams shared four points in that fragmented second period, Jason Carr had a brace for the Tones while Smith was the Clann na nGael marksman as the Tones successfully ran down the clock.
