Lazarus-style recovery saves the Saints

St Vincent's produced a Lazarus-type revival in today's JFC semi-final curtainraiser against Carnaross for a one-point win at Pairc Tailteann.

The Ardcath men won sensationally by 1-10 to 0-12 with substitute Jack Byrne finishing to the net on the hour as Carnaross
simply capitulated in the second-half and finished with 14 men when Frank O'Reilly picked up a totally avoidable second
yellow card with about four minutes remaining.

At that stage Carnaross were clinging on to a 0-10 to 0-8 advantage, but were slowly losing their grip.

That grip had been a stranglehold as Carnaross totally dominated a one-sided first-half and were ahead by 0-8 to 0-1 at the interval as they also tallied five wides and missed a coupe of gilt-edged goal chances.

Six points from Frank O'Reilly comprised a brace each from play, '45s' and frees with Dermot McGee and John L McGee also sending over.

St Vincent's managed a solitary Thomas Field pointed free midway through the half as they struggled to create any meaningful chances.

Carnaross maintained that seven-point advantage after the resumption with points from Charles Brogan and Patrick McDermott that were countered by Richard O'Sullivan (free) and substitute Eoghan Corry.

However, Carnaross didn't score again until Patrick McDermott's point in the 59th minute and by that stage St Vincent's had clawed their way into contention with Thomas Field making a big contribution and Jack Byrne's goal sealing the victory.
