Fire devastation at O'Growney NS

The old O'Growney National School in Athboy went up in flames last night, suffering extensive damage in a fire which saw flames leaping through the roof of the building.

At the same time, fire fighters were also battling a blaze at Beauparc where livestock had to be rescued from a burning farm building.

The fire at O'Growney School  broke out at around 1010pm last night. Units from Navan, Kells and Trim battled the fire until around 2.30am and the building suffered extensive damage.

Around the same time, units from Dunshaughlin and Ashbourne fought a blaze at a farm building in Beauparc, and saved livestock from the flames.

Athboy councillor, David Gilroy said it was "absolutely devastating to see our Old O’Growney National School  building burn....

"Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious tonight please inform the Guards. This building played a huge role in generations of our areas people.

"Well done as always to the emergency services in their response. These men were out tonight when they should have been at home with their families," he said on his Facebook page..
