Death of retired Trim publican and politician, Michael Lenihan

The death has occurred of the former Trim urban councillor and retired High Street publican, Michael Lenihan, of the James Griffin Pub. Mr Lenihan died last night.
He took over the famous hostelry in May 1977, after it was bequeathed to him by Veronica Griffin, widow of the late publican, James Griffin, who was also a Fianna Fail TD for Meath. Delvin native Mr Lenihan has been a barman in the pub for some 30 years prior to that. He played hurling with both Westmeath and Meath.
First elected to Trim Urban council in the 1950s, he was re-elected for Fianna Fail following a thirty-year gap in 1994, and served until 2004.
He was predeceased in 2006 by his wife, Lil Kiely, and is survived by his son, Tom, daughter-in-law, Liz, and granddaughter, Hannah.
This evening, James Griffin Pub posted:  “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a dear father, grandfather boss and friend .... Michael ( Mickey ) Lenihan. The James Griffin Pub will remain closed. He was a legend and a national treasure and we will miss him dearly.”

The Funeral takes place at 12.30pm on Sunday 29th December in St Patrick's Church, Trim. (House strictly private at all times by family request.)
