Death of former Navan Road Club chairman, Maxie Maguire

The death has occurred of Maxie (Michael) Maguire of Brews Hill in Navan, a former chairman of Navan Road Club.

He died this morning at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, in his 89th year.

A long-serving chairman of the cycling club, he recently attended a function to celebrate Brian Connaughton's 50th anniversary of winning the Ras Tailtean, in Fergie's of Kilmessan.

At that event, cyclist and former broadcaster PJ Nolan described Maxie as possibly one of the greatest men any of those present had ever met.

"Back in 1976, he organised the first 'Unity Race', bringing together all the organisations in Irish cycling," he said.

"We were all suspended for doing so - it took real guts and courage to do that," he added.

Pre deceased by his wife, Imelda, and brothers Paddy and Jim, Max is very survived by his sons Stan, Declan and Michael, daughter Denise, son in law Colin, daughters in law June, Orla and Geraldine, grandchildren Robbie, Cian, Leah, Laura, James and Daniel, brothers, relatives and friends.

He is reposing at the Fitzsimons Funeral Home, Navan, this Tuesday afternoon from 3 pm with removal at 6.30pm to arrive in St. Mary's Church for 7pm. Funeral Mass on Wednesday morning at 10am, followed by burial afterwards in Kilmessan Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to Our Lady's Hospital, Navan.
