€1.6m to upgrade derelict and vacant sites in Kells has been welcomed

News that Meath Co Council has allocated €1.6m to upgrade derelict and vacant sites in Kells has been welcomed by local residents this week.
The properties are located on Church Street and Pitcher Lane and have been the subject of much debate and consternation for some years with fears for their deteriorating condition being expressed.
It's understood that a minimum of seven buildings will benefit and there will be ancillary works on a number of others depending on their respective conditions.

Welcoming the news, Cllr Sarah Reilly said: “An application was submitted to the Department of Housing for funding to address premises on Church Street and Pitcher Lane in Kells”.
“In recent years numerous people and Kells Local Heroes have contacted me to express their concern for the structural safety of some of these building.
“Their concerns are justified and I'm delighted that action is now being taken.”
The North Meath Cllr further confirmed that this funding is in addition to the recent €10.6 million allocation for Carrick Street.
She stated that plans for the works on Carrick Street were progressing.

“The €1.6m received is additional monies and it will compliment the works scheduled for Carrick Street. The county council has commenced the process to appoint a contractor to develop a Master Plan for the Carrick Street development.

“When this is complete I expect that it will come before the councillors for consideration before it goes on public display. “
Ken Murray, Chairman of Kells Local Heroes said, “This is great news for the town and is yet another vote of confidence by the council in plans to improve the cosmetic look of Kells as part of our long-term plan to make the area a better place to visit, work and live in.”
