Conor Irwin presents a cheque to McVerry Trust.

Large sum of money raised for McVerry Trust

Just under 200 people turned out for the third annual Midsummer Walk for the Homeless on Saturday 22nd June with €17,400 raised for the Peter McVerry Trust.

About half of these started on the Hill of Tara and made it all the way to Bru Na Boinne (Newgrange ) some six hours later with the walk taking place in wonderful weather.

"The walk is most enjoyable way to see some of Meath's most beautiful countryside and the chat and comraderie made took the mind off the challenge itself," commented Dr Irwin who is one of the driving forces behind what is by now an annual fund-raising event.

"For many walkers this is now an annual date in their diary and next year's walk is already pencilled in for Saturday 20th June," commented Dr Irwin. Already walks have taken place over the last few years.

"The total raised from the three Midsummer Walks has reached €45,000 and PMV deeply appreciate the generosity of all concerned," added Dr Irwin. "It  now hoped that other Midsummer Walks for the Homeless can happen elsewhere.

"There is no reason why we can't have a Midsummer Walk in Mayo or Tipperary just as we do in Meath. The Irish people have a great sense of social justice and there is huge concern and sympathy for the plight of the homeless everywhere."

Dr Irwin wants to thank the many volunteers who helped make this event happen in particular three local bus companies who generously gave their services in support of the walk. These were Padraig O'Brien ( Navan Bus Company ) Anne Marie McKenna ( A to B Taxis ) and Miriam McKenna  ( Flexibus Louth / Meath.). The main sponsors were Ratoath Orthodontics.
