There will be an intermittent closure of the N51 while work ont he Fire Station junction continues

End of the line for Railway Street as we know it

Navan motorists face a summer of disruption as work begins on the massive €12million investment in streetscapes and infrastructure in the town.

Work will begin later this month on upgrading Railway Street and opening it to two way traffic, from the Solstice roundabout to Brews HIll.
This will be the first phase of the Navan 2030 works which will take place over the next three to four years, bringing huge changes to the streets and lanes, including bus bays on either side of a widened Kennedy Road, as well as a park and ride facility outside the town.
The road closure at Railway Street is scheduled to begin at 10pm on Sunday 23rd of June until 10pm on Sunday 25th of August.
Diversion and information signage will be in place and access for residents and property holders will be facilitated throughout the closure period.
“When Railway St is two-way, it will give flexibility of traffic movement while other works are taking place,” said Meath Co Council Director of Services, Kevin Stewart.
He said the work in Railway St will be a major job with complete realignment of footpaths and there will be a reduction in parking spaces.
“It will be a widened road so we have to take away some parking to make best use of space for two lanes traffic and footpaths.”
The work is scheduled to take place during the school holidays when traffic in the town is lighter than usual.
Meanwhile work on the junction at the fire station is proceeding and the council is doing “its best to manage traffic”. Meath County Council has made an order to intermittently close the N51 to northbound traffic in Navan between its junction with the R147 at the Fire Station and its junction with the L3406 Ratholdren Road.
The controversial transformation of central Navan will see an investment of more than €12million in an overhaul of Navan including the reversal of traffic flow on Ludlow Street, with traffic coming into the town from the Dublin direction up the street towards Market Square rather than the current one-way traffic flow away from Market Square.
Key elements of the Plan include; visual enhancements to the streetscape, upgrading streets, laneways and public spaces in the historic and modern areas of the town centre, with high quality pedestrian facilities and connectivity throughout as well as greater accessibility for pedestrians, including people with disabilities, cyclists, public transport, cars and other vehicles.
The €12million ‘Navan 2030’ revamp is aimed at making the town more pedestrian and cycle friendly as well as making it more accessible to shoppers and public transport,
Local and regional bus routes will be rationalised and integrated and a new edge-of-town ‘Terminus’/ ‘Park & Ride’ for buses and coaches will be provided.
Through traffic will be re-routed around the town centre and pedestrian space will be increased and enhanced throughout.
