End of an era..James Allen Menswear will close its doors for the last time this Saturday

VIDEO: Iconic James Allen Menswear store in Kells to close after 43 years this weekend

There will be more than a tinge of sadness on Farrell Street in Kells this weekend when James Allen locks the doors of his famous menswear shop for the last time after 43 years in business.

Since 1976 he has supplied local people with clothes from his outlet believing that it's important to provide a good quality product at a reasonable price.

It's the kind of philosophy that has served him well over the years - but now he feels it's time to step down and while he has enjoyed the good times he has also worked through the bad.

"I've seen recessions in the 1980s, there was a major recession of 2008 but we came through them pretty well," he says as he reflects back on his years in business.

Menswear drapers are, James adds, diminishing in numbers and he is acutely aware he is one of the last in Kells. However on Saturday he will bring the curtain down - and an era will draw to a close.

We're sure the people of Kells will be out to wish him and his family well as they mark the end of an era at the store this Saturday.  The Chronicle will be there to mark the occasion and we have an extensive chat with James in next week's paper.
