Over €10,000 raised towards repair of Boyneside Trail

Following the disastrous fire at the Boyneside Trail at Oldbridge in July, a local committee has raised €10,091 for repairs to the much used and loved amenity.

The Boyneside Trail Committee presented a cheque to Meath County Council recently for the money, which was raised through an online appeal. The funds raised will assist the Council in completing restoration works.
A 400 metre stretch of the trail was completely destroyed by fire in July (right), caused by a suspected arson attack.
The route opened in 2013 and has been a very popular amenity used by locals and visitors to the Boyne Valley.
Current estimates put the total repair costs at €170,000. It is not covered by insurance.
“We were absolutely outraged by this incident and determined to not let this wanton destruction stop our long term plans for this great facility”, said committee member Eddie Phelan.
“Meath County Council did great work in completing a temporary surface structure and ensured the facility was reopened for visitors coming to the region for the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann”, said Drogheda’s Lord Mayor Frank Godfrey.
“We were overwhelmed by the support we received from the local community, who have used and supported our trail from the start. The funds raised send out a strong message that the Boyneside Trail is part of our community and is a project that is greatly appreciated and valued. This has given the Boyneside Trail project renewed focus to build a greenway from Mornington, at the Boyne Estuary to Bru na Boinne interpretation centre”, said Chairman, Peter Monahan.
Tom Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council said “I am delighted to accept this cheque on behalf of Meath County Council, and thank all the people  who contributed and supported this very worthy campaign.”
