Fake collector warning by club hit by arsonists

A Navan soccer club which was hit by an arson attack recently has warned people to be vigilant after reports of a a fake door-to-door collection in their name.

OMP say a man in his 30s called to at least one business premises in Blackcastle at the weekend, pretending to be from the club and asking for a donation for its repair.

The club say gardai have been informed and CCTV footage has been obtained.

"The club is not going around door-to-door looking for donations so if anyone is approached, please contact a club member or Navan gardai," said committee member Declan Jordan.

Meanwhile OMP is planning to close a gofundme page today (Tuesday) after their target of €1,000 was surpassed.

The FAI and Dundalk FC have also pledged to help to replace children's kits destroyed by smoke damage as well as fund repairs to the dressing rooms at St Mary's Park which were damaged by the blaze.

"We would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us in any way they could to get the club back on track," said Declan.

"We hope to start repairs this week so will be again in full flight very soon."
