Public meeting to save post office in Rathmolyon

A public meeting to fight to save Rathmolyon Post Office takes place in the local parish hall tonight at 8pm.

Rathmolyon Post Office is one of seven post offices in Meath to close as part 159 post office closures nationwide that were recently announced.

Last Friday, the post office in Rathmolyon closed its doors for the last time marking the end of an era in the village. 

Local shop owner Christy Ryan said it was a "sad day" for the village and that the post office was very much a meeting point locally and also served a large hinterland. He said elderly people were very disappointed and that many wouldn't have transport to get to another post office. 

Mr Ryan is willing to consider taking on the post office contract but says there has been a "firm no" to this to date. 

Tonight's meeting has been organised by Meath West Deputy Peadar Tóibín who is urging locals to come along and stand up for their local community. As well as the economic benefit to the village of having a post office, Deputy Tóibín pointed out the importance of human connectivity and providing opportunities for people to engage with others in their community.
