Rescind unfair charges and taxes
Dear sir - We wish to address the matter of the Household Charge and its inherent inequities. We have no objection to paying our fair share of legitimate taxes but this is neither legitimate nor just under any democratic criteria. The claim that this Government has a legitimate mandate to impose unjust charges or levies is a blatant lie and those who peddle this untruth must face the consequences of that untruth. The fact that this Government has a record majority in the Dáil does not give it the right to foist unjust laws, taxes or other impediments on the people. We elected this Government on the strength of the combined manifestoes which expressly ruled out the payment of any further monies into dead banks, and promised no property tax and no cuts in education. In addition both parties committed to protecting the weak in society, the old and the vulnerable. We remind you of Enda Kenny's 'Contract With The People' and his repeated assertion that "This is not your fault". This Government has eroded its democratic legitimacy by reneging on the most important commitments of their pitch for election. The application of any form of democracy absolutely rests on the bedrock principle of consent. Without that consent democracy has no meaning and the 'Supreme Power' - the people - detaches itself from those who govern them. Those who govern do so on the warped pretence that they are the democratically elected authority. Always remember that lying in pursuit of public office renders any mandate thereby secured invalid. We are all too familiar with the people's total detachment from the disgraced governments of the past fifteen years or so who along with delinquent bankers, crooked developers, highly paid regulators and civil servants, who failed to carry out their very important duties to this economy and society thereby causing the destruction of our economy and which now continues to destroy our social cohesion. Their collective treasonable behaviour and activities have resulted in the massive transfer of wealth from those who had only in recent generations begun to share in the wealth of this fragile State due to their hard work and endeavours, to faceless bond holders and hedge funds who gambled and won massively at our expense. Treason is defined as 'betrayal of one's country' and there can be no greater treason of a country than the wilful criminal destruction of the economy of that country by a government charged to preserve and defend the wealth of the nation. This Government came to power on the promise that things would change, change utterly under its reign and we the people voted very strongly for this. Now however, the Government has reneged on almost all of the critical areas where pledges and promises were made and is usurping the power we assigned through our democratic vote to this coalition government. The people want the Government to succeed in the rebuilding of our economy and protecting our society. However the path now being trod by the Government has already alienated large swathes of society. We now urge you to call for and work for fairness, equity and justice for all in society bearing in mind the foundation of pledges and promises with which you secured our mandate to govern. Start with rescinding this inequitable household tax and septic tank charge. Most importantly stop threatening us because that will surely heighten our anger and opposition to inequitable taxes. Yours, Syl Murphy and Kieran Griffin, Enfield.
