Meath Golf Club to host Irish Women's Amateur Open

From June 21st -23rd, The Irish Womens Amateur Open will take centre stage at Headfort GC in Kells.

On June 21st-23rd, Headfort Golf Club will host the Irish Womens Amateur Open Championship on their prestigious Championship Course. The Irish Womens Amateur Open is a three-day tournament and there are currently 94 players due to compete at the Kells venue. Roughly 50 players will make it past the cut on the Sunday evening for the final day on Monday, June 23rd.

Jacqueline McCormack, Chairperson of Headfort Golf Club, said "We are delighted to once again be given the opportunity to host a golf tournament of this level and we look forward to meeting players and supporters on and off the course. The Championship Course designed by Ryder Cup hero, Christy O’Connor, takes full advantage of its natural undulations and majestic native trees. Headfort Golf Club is looking forward to making this year's Irish Womens Amateur Open Championship a superb event for players and supporters. Womens participation in golf is growing however we still need more girls and women to play and enjoy golf and all its benefits.'"

David Reilly, General Manager of Headfort GC, discussed how the course was opened for new members in the year 2000, with the intention of hosting tournaments like this. "When the Golf Course opened 25 years ago, the whole ethos was to hold championships like this. We had a Challenge Tour event here back in 2023 and the Irish Amateur Close Championship in 2022 so this is a nice follow-on from them. The Golf course in itself was built for these types of Championships." said David.

"We have two magnificent courses here. Golf Ireland classifies their course rankings as Links courses and Parkland courses. The championship course sits 12th in Parkland courses in Ireland. When you differentiate between private courses and member courses, the course sits fourth on the list of member courses. It is a big honour and it's a testament to the course and the club as a whole that we are so highly ranked."

Beth Coulter who is currently 46th in the World Amateur rankings, has finished second twice in the competition, in 2021 and 2023. The 20-year-old will be hoping to go one place better this year but she will have stiff competition especially as there is a high international contingent traveling to compete.

"There are 24 non-Irish golf members who have entered. There is one from the States, there are a good few from the UK, and there are plenty from Europe and Spain. There will be a wide spread of international golfers competing."

The event itself will be free to come along and watch for anyone who is interested in seeing some of the best ladies' golfers in the country tee it up.

"There is no charge to come and watch this competition. It is free for anyone to come along and see some of the best players in the country. There is no booking involved, you just have to turn up on the day. We will have several volunteer members on the day helping out with parking and there will be ample room for anyone who wants to come along and watch."
