Calls for traffic calming measures on Duleek to Kilmoon Cross road

Calls have been made for traffic calming measures at Duleek Soccer Club to facilitate safe access to and from the grounds for children and families.

The motion was put forward by local Fianna Fail Cllr Stephen McKee at this morning's Laytown/Bettystowm Municipal District meeting.

McKee emphasised the need for traffic calming measures along the R152 road between Drogheda and Kilmoon Cross to ensure safety of all road users.

"There has been a number of accidents on the R152 road and I know signage has been put in, but there is great concern locally about road safety right from the top of Platin all the way to Kilmoon," he said.

"I have asked that a pedestrian crossing would be put in and some kind of traffic calming at Duleek Soccer Club.

McKee added that the number of HGVs travelling through to avoid the tolls contributed to the traffic volume and the speed of traffic. He said:

"I would ask the council to look really seriously at how we can reduce the speed on that R152 Road. We have a footpath there that was put in a number of years ago that allows children to use the footpath but there is no safe crossing at all.

"It's a very dangerous road, I certainly wouldn't let my kids walk and cross the road there. I think given the huge number of kids playing football there it's a very well used facility and we are trying to encourage kids to walk and cycle."

Fine Gael Cllr Paddy Meade concurred with Cllr McKee's concerns about safety issues on the R152.

"When you are pulling out from Kavanagh's car garage you are taking your life in your hands," he said.

"As soon as people are out this side from Drogheda they are going 100km to 120km and even more. Between Drogheda roundabout and Duleek we could consider reducing the speed limit if that is a possibility, coming out of any of those those properties is very dangerous especially if you are turning right."

In their response Meath County Council said there is currently no funds ring fenced for traffic calming works on the R152 but would consider traffic calming measures from a pedestrian/vehicle interaction perspective when funding becomes available.
