Eddie Maguire

Eddie to fly Irish flag in Spain

Former Meath, Carlow and Mayo footballer Eddie Maguire will be part of a contingent of Irish players heading to Spain to take part in the Spanish Blind Golf Open at the Centro Nacional de Golf in Madrid from 22nd May to the 26th May.

Maguire will join other members of the Irish Blind Golf team including captain Patrick Morgan Jnr, Paddy Power and Adrian Downey.

The team will be accompanied by their guides, Pat Morgan Snr, Davey Barden, Pat Cockburn and Tommy Geraghty.

"As a matter of information the four golfers representing Ireland in the Spanish Open are paying their own way and also paying for their guides," explained Maguire who lives outside Navan.

Maguire played senior football for his native Mayo as well as Carlow and Meath where he also worked as a teacher. However, an accident damaged his sight forcing him to take early retirement.

He has turned to golf and achieved a long held ambition when last year he won the Handa British Open for blind and visually impaired golfers at Galform Golf Club, in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

The Irish Blind Golf golf classic is only around the corner and all support is greatly needed and will be gratefully accepted.

Those who are not signed up for the event can do so. The classic will be held at Beechpark GC, Dublin, on Friday 3rd June, tee times 10.30-2.30. Further details from any members of the committee or by calling (087) 6031046.

The next outing after the classic will be to Portlaoise GC on Friday 24th June, tee times from 10.45am.

"It will be our first visit to Portlaoise GC and and should be a great day out for our members," added Maguire.
