Volunteers needed to raise puppies

Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind are currently recruiting puppy raising volunteers in the Ratoath and Dunboyne areas.

As part of the programme puppy raisers will get the opportunity to foster puppies from age eight weeks until approximately 12-14 months. At eight weeks old the puppies begin their journey to becoming a guide dog for a person who is vision impaired or an assistance dog for a family of a child with autism. This journey starts in the homes of volunteers under the direction of puppy raising supervisors, where they learn basic rules and obedience. At approximately 14 months they move into a training centre with highly skilled trainers where they work towards graduating as a guide or assistance dog.

In order to be eligible to become a puppy raiser homes must have no more than two other dogs in the home. They must be sociable, well behaved and neutered/spayed. The puppy must not be left alone for prolonged periods of time. Applicants also need to have access to a secured outdoor area. Any children in the home must be over five years of age and although applicants must be 18 years or older, the whole family can get involved. Relibale access to the internet and ability to use the Zoom platform is also required.
