Sensational round puts Lowry into reckoning

A sensational six-under-par 65 has catapulted Offaly's Shane Lowry right into the mix in the second round of the Olympic men's golf tournament.

Lowry is currently joint sixth, alongside fellow Team Ireland competitor Rory McIlroy - with both three shots behind the current leader, Mexico's Carlos Ortiz and American Xander Schauffele who had not yet finished his round.

With the golf event, for the second day in a row, subject to suspension due to weather, there are still a significant number of players out on course.

Lowry's 65 is currently the joint best round of the day alongside the leader Ortiz, although Schauffele is currently seven under for the round on the course.

Lowry's opening round of one-under-par 70 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club had left him joint 25th of the 60 competitors - but it seems he will now tee off the third round firmly within the top ten and possibly just three shots off the lead.
