Death of former Navan council chairman, Danny Fitzpatrick

Businessman had thirty years' public service

The death has occurred of the former long-serving Navan councillor and Navan Urban Council chairman, Danny Fitzpatrick, at his home in Spain.

Businessman Mr Fitzpatrick once ran Abbeylands Furniture on Flower Hill in Navan.

Originally a Labour representative, he was first elected in 1967, and became chairman 21 years later. He later joined Fianna Fail, and when he retired in 1998, he was succeeded by the current deputy mayor of Navan, Cllr Tommy Reilly, who was co-opted to his seat.

Mr Fitzpatrick was also a member of Meath County Council.

Disaster struck the family business in 1982 when the furniture factory was destroyed in a fire.

Mr Fitzpatrick was also a keen racegoer and member of Navan Racecourse, where he enjoyed success with his own runners, and was a member of Navan Golf Club committee there.

Deceased is survived by his wife Emily, family, Danny, Caroline, Kevin, Sandra, Pauline, Barry, Dianne, Mark, Brian and Alison, their spouses and partners, sister Claire (Dunne), brothers Billy, Jimmy, Michael, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, relatives and a large circle of friends. He was predeceased by brother, John.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
