Talented young artists win top awards

Six Meath students have won top prizes in the 66th Texaco Children’s Art Competition. All were winners of Special Merit Awards for artworks that final adjudicator, Professor Declan McGonagle said "were imaginative and displayed high levels of skill".

They were Jane Singleton (age 17), a pupil at Ashbourne Community School; Serena Chen (13) from St Peter's College, Dunboyne; Finn Healy (five) from Dunboyne Junior National School; Candy Guo (six) from Ashbourne Community National School and Anya Clarke-Carr (16) and Naoise Clarke-Carr (14), both from Clarke Art School, Ratoath.

No strangers to the Competition, Anya, Jane and Naoise have all won prizes on previous occasions. Last year, Anya won third prize in the 14-15 years age category, whilst Jane and Naoise both won Special Merit Awards in 2018 and 2012 respectively.

With the onset of Covid-19, the competition had to be extended over a longer period this year with delays to the final adjudication process and the announcement of winners.

As a result, activities normally undertaken during April and May – traditionally, the introduction of winners to the media and the formal presentation of prizes – had to be set aside as a consequence of which prizes will be delivered by hand without the possibility of an awards ceremony.
