Clancy adds Bellewstown man to his squad for 2021

Drogheda Utd manager Timmy Clancy is quickly assembling his squad for 2021 and last night the club announced that Meath man Luke Heeney has signed a new deal.

Clancy took his first tentative managerial steps with Drogheda Utd only weeks after the club was relegated from the Premier League in 2017 and now he has them back and raring to go in the Premier for 2021.

Heeney is the fourth player to be announced as part of Clancy’s 2021 Premier Division squad.

The Bellewstown native first joined the club ahead of the 2019 season from St Patrick’s Athletic and went on to make 30 appearances in his first year in senior football.

Despite missing part of the 2020 season through injury, Heeney returned to play a vital part in the run in to the First Division title race.

The 21-year-old finished the season with nine appearances and scored Drogheda’s second goal against Cabinteely on the final day of the season to secure the title and automatic promotion.

“Signing back was a no-brainer for me. Playing for my local side in the Premier is something I’m really looking forward to," commented Heeney.

“I think going into our first season in the Premier the goal would be to establish ourselves up there and build from there really.
