Meath legend Donal on hand to help Darren celebrate a Big Birthday!

Darren McCabe of Dean Cogan Place in Navan turned 50 last Thursday, 25th June and had a very special visitor to help him mark the occasion.

Darren’s big birthday party at the Greyhound stadium in Dundalk had to be cancelled because of Covid-19 but thanks to Rosaleen Heary from the Irish Wheelchair Association - she didn’t let Darren’s birthday pass unnoticed.

Rosaleen organised for former Meath Football legend Donal Curtis from Rathkenny to call to Darren’s home to surprise and wish him all the best for his big day.

Darren has been an avid Meath Football fan all his life was absolutely thrilled to see Donal in his front garden. While many of Darren’s friends and neighbours came out to congratulate him on reaching this big milestone in his life and sing happy birthday to him, Donal took centre stage and Darren was only interested in chatting to Donal about Meath football's future.

"It was a lovely occasion and testament to Donal Curtis who didn’t only turn up last Thursday but has had numerous phone calls with Darren over the Covid-19 Lockdown period.

These calls were important for Darren who had to isolate and stay at home because he is in an at-risk category," said Sean Whelan, Service Coordinator IWA Nava.

"Darren attends the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) Recourse and outreach Service in Navan two days per week and has found it difficult to be isolated during these challenging times.

But with the support of IWA staff and phone calls from Donal and others Darren has kept his spirits high. He has started to venture out in the community again now with the support of his key worker Rosaleen and other IWA support staff."

"Darren is looking forward to having one hell of a party when restrictions are lifted and when its safe to do so. On behalf of Darren and his family and the Irish Wheelchair Association Navan I would like to thank Donal, our very own Rosaleen Heary for their efforts to make Darren’s birthday a really special and enjoyable occasion."
