Historic Waller Cup cycle race on Sunday

Bohermeen Cycling Club will host the prestigious Waller Cup,one of the oldest cycle races in the country, this Sunday from 10am at Bohermeen Community Centre.

This will be the first year that a grandson of the late Vice Admiral Waller will attend and present the Waller Cup to the winner of the A1 race.

The Waller Cup was first contested in 1937 and this year great granddaughters of Vice Admiral Waller, Charlotte and Sarah Westrop Craig Waller met Bohermeen Cycling Club chairman Joe Ball and secretary Marie Reilly with the Waller Cup last January.

To mark this historical occasion, the club will hold a welcoming function for the Waller family in Bohermeen Community Centre on Saturday at 7pm.

On Sunday there will be a jam-packed programme of races, starting with the youth (u-12, u-14 and u-16), ladies and A4 races at 10.30am.

Those races will be closely followed by the A1, A2, A3 and Junior races at 1.30pm. 

All races sign on and start from Bohermeen Community Centre. 

This year's race will be sponsored by Cosgrove Electrical Services and there are also several other sponsors who have given generously to the event.

There will be a prizefund of over €3,000, with prizes given for the first eight in all categories and first three girls in the youth categories. 

It is expected to be a great day of racing around the roads of Bohermeen and spectators are welcome, especially at the prime spots along Greetiagh hill and the New Line.
