Peters grateful for support
The Bernard Dunne - Poonswat Kratingdaenggym superbantamweight title fight in the 02 on Saturday night was, in the words of one of the Sunday newspapers, 'Dunne and Dusted' in nine minutes when the Thai challenger to his title, known as 'the tank' lived up to his name and floored him three times in the third round with a lethal left hook. Dunne, who was taken to Beaumont Hospital as a precautionary measure after receiving oxygen in the ring, was disappointed afterwards, and admitted that through his own 'stupid fault' he got lured into fighting early on. While he promised he'd come back from the defeat, his manager, Dunshaughlin-based Brian Peters said that no snap decisions would be made. "Thankfully Bernard is fine," Peters said on Sunday afternoon. "His pride is wounded because he was so desperate to give the country a lift. We want to thank everyone for their support, it means an awful lot to Bernard and the rest of the team." Peters continued: "Unfortunately it wasn't to be, Poonsawat was just too strong, but I've no doubt that Bernard will bounce back from this. After the Kiko Martinez defeat there wasn't too many predicting that Bernard would go on to win a world title but he did just that and he can come back from this setback as well." The fight night also saw a standing ovation to Navan Olympic boxing medallist, the late Darren Sutherland, whose funeral took place last week.
