Late Sean McCaffrey had a major input to the NECSL

Sean McCaffrey, who passed away today, had a big involvement in the inaugural years of the North Eastern Counties Schoolboys' League when the name was changed in the 1990s from the Meath Schoolboys' League.

The late Mr McCaffrey was a member of the Oriel Celtic club in Monaghan and along with people like Art Agnew from Carrick Rovers (Carrickmacross) and Eamonn O'Reilly (Clones Town) they affilaited teams to what was the newly-formed NECSL.

Sean was involved in coaching and managing many NECSL under-age teams and also was involved in organising prestigious friendlies against English club QPR (in Ratoath) and Leeds Utd (in Longford) as part of mini-tournaments in which Oriel Celtic also played at Gortakeegan in Monaghan.

Sean also brought NECSL teams to play in tournaments in Europe and had a big impact on the development and coaching structures in the NECSL before he took a role with the FAI.

He was also a key figure in the establishment of Monaghan Utd and took charge of the club in their early years in the League of Ireland and also enjoyed a short spell with Dundalk in 2012.

He will be best remembered for his impact with the Ireland u-17, u-18 and u-19 teams over a seven-year period. During that time the u-17s competed in the UEFA U-17 European Championships in 2008.
