Master McGrath hits hat-trick

Young Athboy man Jamie McGrath had a memorable night in his career to-date when he hit a hat-trick as Dundalk defeated Sligo Rovers 4-0 in the Airtricity League Premier at Oriel Park last night.

The previous week McGrath didn't get a run out as Dundalk lost 1-2 away to Shamrock Rovers.

However, he returned to the side last night and took his chances with the last of his three goals scored from the penalty spot in the closing minutes.

McGrath broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute with an excellent finish and he doubled his tally with an even better strike 20 minutes later.

Niclas Vemmelund made it 3-0 before McGrath put an end to Dundalk’s run of two straight defeats with a stoppage time spot-kick.

Previously with St Patrick's Athletic, McGrath was signed by Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny in the close season and last night's achievement went a long way to nailing down a regular place in the reigning champions starting 11.
