Athboy girl hits extra-time cup winner

Emma McGrath from Athboy hit a sensational extra-time winning goal for Dublin team Kilmore Celtic in the u-14 WFAI Cup semi-final against hosts Cashel Town on Sunday in front of a large home crowd.

The Meath players with Kilmore Celtic include twins Robyn and Charlie Murray from Yellow Furze who both started playing locally with Kentstown Rovers, Emma McGrath and Ella O'Toole from Athboy, who started with Athboy Celtic and Michela Gavigan from Rathkenny.

The number of players from Meath who are travelling to Dublin on a weekly basis to play in the Metropolitan Girls League (MGL) continues to increase with Coolock-based Kilmore Celtic the latest to cater for enthusiasts from the Royal County.

Kilmore Celtic officials established a girls section this season and currently they have a team in the u-13 Premier and and they also won the u-12 WFAI Cup last October.

The talented Kilmore u-13s lead the way in the MGL Premier, but on Sunday they recorded a superb extra-time victory in the u-14 WFAI Cup semi-final against hosts Cashel Town.

The victory was all the more noteworthy as Kilmore trailed by two goals at half-time before staging a memorable second-half recovery to force the extra-time in which Emma McGrath hit the winning goal.

On the way to the semi-final the Kilmore girls defeated St Joseph's by 3-0 in the first round. They received a walkover from Maynooth in the next round and then defeated Listowel Celtic by 3-1 before making the long trip to Cork to tackle Wilton Utd where they recorded a 2-0 victory in the quarter-final.
