Navan Cosmos player Paul Delaney with Trim Celtic's Aaron Newman in pursuit

Ivers swoops to give cosmos the edge in cup showdown

The treble is still on for Navan Cosmos after they ensured their place in the NEFL Challenge Cup final with a 1-0 win over Trim Celtic at the MDL this evening.

The golden goal was scored in the opening minute of the second-half when Laurence Ivers knocked the ball to the net from close range.

The win keeps Cosmos in the hunt for the Premier title, the Kilmessan Shield and the Challenge Cup.

Before a sizeable crowd both teams served up a tough, roller-coaster encounter that could have gone either way.

The Trim side enjoyed most of the play in the opening half and created a number of good opportunities.

The best fell to striker Derek Donohoe but he headed wide when it looked certain he would score.

Aaron Newman was a constant threat for Trim Celetic but they were unable to translate a large amount of possession into the goal they so badly needed.

Navan Cosmos threatened only occasionally and they went close to grabbing a second in the closing minutes when a Conor Walsh shot was saved by Trim Celtic goalkeeper Barry O'Callaghan.

The second-half was a tense affair with plenty of meaty tackles but once in front Cosmos defended well and go through to the final.
