Athboy teenager in republic of ireland u19 panel

Athboy teenager Jamie McGrath is one of four home-based players named today in Paul Doolin's Republic of Ireland squad for the forthcoming UEFA u-19 Championships qualifying tournament in Waterford and Wexford next week against Malta, Switzerland and Gibraltar.

McGrath is now with St Patrick's Athletic and earlier this year scored the equaliser in a 3-3 draw for the Irish Schools against England in the Centenary Shield at Bristol City's Ashton Gate at the end of March.

Ireland face Malta in their opening game at Waterford’s RSC on Thursday, 13th November  with the second fixture against Gibraltar at Wexford’s Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday, 15th November.

They complete the tournament against Switzerland on Tuesday, 18th November at the RSC (2.00pm).

The Irish u-19s have been in excellent form this season. They beat the Netherlands 1-0 at Tallaght Stadium in September then played Sweden twice in October, winning 1-0 and drawing 2-2.

“We’re looking forward to the tournament. The South East is a good football area and I’m hopeful that we’ll get strong support for our fixtures,” said Doolin.

'People will be looking to the Swiss game as being the big one but we won’t be underestimating Malta or Gibraltar.”
