FAI award for Gerry Gorman

Long-serving Meath & District League secretary Gerry Gorman was last night honoured by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) when he received a special award for his services to football. The award was presented at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone last night as part of the events for the FAI AGM weekend.

Gerry Gorman was the driving force behind the formation of the Mid-Meath League in 1980 and has maintained that link in the intervening 34 years during which the fledgling organisation became the Meath & District League a few years later.

There are plans now to change the name to the North East Football League and that transition will be completed over the next number of months due to some technical and legal matters that have to be addressed.

It is likely that this current season will be the last for the MDL before the change in identity is finalised.

Next month the Meath Chronicle will publish a special supplement looking at 34 years of the MDL - any clubs that wish to submit information may do so to sports@meathchronicle.ie

Also last night former MDL PRO Justin Burke, who lives in Cavan, received the FAI PRO of the year award.
