Horgan and Drogheda Utd part ways

Robbie Horgan's term as manager of Drogheda Utd has ended by mutual agreement.

Horgan, who lives in Robinstown, took over as manager last year after serving under Mick Cooke as assistant from 2011 to 2013.

Drogheda Utd made a bright start to this season but in recent weeks they shipped a series of heavy defeats including a 6-0 loss to fellow strugglers Athlone Town.

Following a meeting last night the Drogheda Utd Board of Directors and Horgan agreed to part company with immediate effect.

The Board thanked Horgan for his dedication to the club since 2011 when he joined the coaching staff.

During a lenghty playing career as a goalkeeper Horgan played with Shamrock Rovers, Drogheda Utd, Shelbourne, Dublin City, Monaghan Utd and St Patrick's Athletic.

However his spell as manager of Drogheda Utd proved less than successful as his team struggled to find form.

'Robbie is one of the most committed and hardest working people in the business and everyone in the club thanks him for his long-standing commitment to Drogheda Utd and wishes him well for the future,' said a spokesperson for the club.

'He and his family have been very much a part of the Drogheda Utd community over the years and it is a privilege knowing them.'

Commenting on the outcome of discussions Horgan added:

'Through mutual agreement but with a very heavy heart l have parted ways with Drogheda Utd.

'I would like to thank everybody at the club for their support and hard work not just this season but over the last three seasons and also during my time here as a player.

'I have had the privilege to play, coach, be assistant manager and manager of this club with notable success along the way.

'Anyone that knows me, knows how much l love Drogheda Utd and l managed it with passion and pride. Unfortunately, this passion and pride was not being reflected on the pitch with the inevitable outcome.'
