Gary is top keeper

Bohermeen man Gary Rogers was last night named as goalkeeper of the year by the Soccer Writers Association of Ireland (SWAI) at their annual awards ceremony in Dublin. Rogers was one of three goalkeepers vying for the top accolade - Gabriel Sava (Drogheda Utd) and Ger Doherty (Derry City) were the others. The award was thoroughly deserved as Rogers played a crucial role between the posts for Sligo Rovers as the Connacht side claimed the League of ireland title for the first time in 35 years with two games to spare. It was hectic week for the Meath man, who has signed for Sligo Rovers for another season, as he was at the FIFpro tournament this week also. Rogers will be heading for another awards night next Friday night when he attends the Meath Chronicle / Cusack Hotel Group Sportsperson of the Year ceremony at Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim. Rogers is one of 12 monthly nominees in contention for the overall award. Each monthly nominee will receive an award from MC RTE's Evanne Ni Chuilinn and the contenders include Meath sportsmen like Barry Geraghty, Andrew Lynch, Brian Farrell and Stephen Bray among others. See sportsawards story on this website for full details http://www.meathchronicle.ie/sport/othersport/articles/2013/01/10/4013875-meath-sports-awards--18th-january/ Gary Rogers tweeted this morning: @gaz1garyrogers Great nite at the SWAI awards.
