Parkvilla show signs of promise

Parkvilla continued their recent run of good form in the LSL Div 1A when they gave high-flying Edenderry Town a mighty fright in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Claremont Stadium on Thursday night. In recent weeks Parkvilla defeated Dublin side Beggsboro 5-0 and drew away to Kildare outfit Newbridge Town. Edenderry made the brighter start, but when they failed to rattle a well-organised Parkvilla rearguard they appeared to run out of ideas in a scoreless first-half. Slowly the boys in claret and blue began to grow in confidence and started to take the game to the Offaly side. With both defences keeping the forwards under tight rein it was no surprise that the first half ended scoreless. Parkvilla came back into the game strongly in the second-half and it wasn"t really a surprise when David Hosie found the back of the net with a good strike from 16 yards. Parkvilla had several opportunities to add to the lead with some enterprising play, but just couldn"t supply the finishing touch needed to finish off some well-worked moves. Edenderry put in a big effort and threw everything at Parkvilla in the last 15 minutes, but a combination of some great defending, a bit of luck and some good saves from Paul Giles kept them at bay. When the game entered the last five minutes it looked like Parkvilla would hold out for a fine win but an optimistic shot from 22 yards found the bottom corner of the net much to the relief of the Offaly men who celebrated wildly. With a few players returning from injury and some others returning from Gaelic duty Parkvilla will be hoping that this is the start of a journey up the league table. On this occasion they had good performances by Giles, Hosie, Alan Rogers and Kenny Ratty.
