Heartbreak for Ashbourne
It was heartbreak for Ashbourne as they narrowly lost out 20-22 to Portarlington in the Leinster League Div 1B at Portarlington on Sunday. The visitors were quick out of the blocks with Casey Dunne slotting over from a penalty kick. Soon afterwards a sweeping Ashbourne move, involving Mitchell O'Meara and Marcus Speck, finished with Cathal O'Connor going over for a touchdown. However it didn't take long for Portarlington to hit back with a converted try and penalty to level matters. Just before the break Dunne slotted over a penalty to leave his side 13-10 in front at the break. The second-half started badly for Ashbourne as they conceded two tries and a conversion. However the Meath side were not finished and after executing a turnover O'Connor powered over for his second try of the day. Dunne converted. Despite pressing in the closing stages Ashbourne were unable to get the scores they needed to save the day. Tries from Ciaran Boylan, Edward Conaty, Sean Kent and Keelan Toolan helped Asbhourne draw 34-34 in a Provincial Seconds clash away on Sunday. A Toolan penalty and a Collie Randle drop goal also contributed to tally.
