Elizabeth Morland adds Meath title

Elizabeth Morland was voted the 2013 Young Meath Sportsperson of the Year last January at the annual awards in Knightsbrook Hotel, Trim and she was in action today at the 2014 Meath Athletics Track & Field Championships at Claremont Stadium in Navan. 

She won the u-18 100m hurdles title with plenty to spare - there was no surprise in that, but she also took time out to talk to the Meath Chronicle - see next issue.

The weather wasn't exactly kind to the hard-working officials who were on duty from the timing hut to the presentation tent and all areas in between. Official were available to provide guidance. Other athletes warmed up while spectators huddled for cover when the rain appeared.

Maggie Higgins was busy filling in the times on the result sheets for the athletes, the young and not so young, once armed with the evidence they were despatched towards the medal tent and there was a stalwart of athletics - Michael Heery - handing out the medals.

There was a quick conversation with this correspondent - I decided not to mention the prospects of St Brigid's in the JFC and it was probably a good decision.

The sun was shining but the rain also lashed down - the enthusiasm was infectious and those not in action on the track made regular visits to the posh-sounding Claremont Cafe (as it's now known) although unlikely to be found in the Michelen Guide or any other guide for that matter.

That didn't discourage the customers for coffee, tea, chips and all the other healthy options that non-athletes can indulge in.

Back to Elizabeth Moreland - the team for the European Youth Olympics will be announced tomorrow - she has achieved the qualifying time - she might get selected.
