Navan Athletic Club's annual Simon Cumbers / Paddy Hyland Memorial 6k road race willt ake place this evening with the start from Commons Hardware at 8pm.

Over 1,000 participants signed up and it's likely that by start time that will have swelled to 1,200 or so and you can get a glimpse of the runners on our Facebook Live from 8pm. 

The race commemorates the late Mr Cumbers who was a former Navan AC club member and he was tragically killed in Saudi Arabia in 2004 while working as a reporter for the BBC.

The late Mr Hyland was a prominent member of Navan AC for many years and was well known in Irish athletics as a race starter.

The Alanna Russell Memorial Juvenile races for boys and girls will kick-start the evening from 7pm at the Claremont Stadium track.

The demand for places in the main event, sponsored this year by DID Electrical, has seen the numbers reach a peak of about 1,200.


The start will take place adjacent to Commons Hardware with the area provided to enable all the athletes congregate safely at the start before heading out on to the Commons Road and passing Claremont Stadium to a left turn at the traffic lights through Clogerboy towards the Athboy Road roundabout.

Runners will then follow the old Athboy road taking a left to Commons Lane after St Finian's Cemetry and back towards Claremont Stadium passing the start and completing a three-quarter circuit of the track to finish.

The race boasts a €3,000 prizefund across a number of categories for men and women with medals for all finishers.

The Simon Cumbers Memorial Cup will be presented to the first male athlete and the Paddy Hyland Memorial Cup to the first female athlete.

Parking will be available at the Pairc Tailteann (swimming pool end) car park.
